Sum the areas of all faces.

In depth

Surface area is the total area of all faces. Unfold the prism into a net, find the area of each face, and add. For a prism, SA = 2 × base area + perimeter of base × height.

Worked example

A box 2 × 3 × 4: 2(6 + 8 + 12) = 52.

Real-world uses

Common mistake

Forgetting one of the faces or counting hidden ones twice.

How to learn this

  1. Read the key idea and say it in your own words.
  2. Work through the worked example, then try a similar problem.
  3. Use the interactive lesson’s visual and mini-quiz to check the pattern.
